Rigby Funeral Home was started by George H. Rigby in 1856 in the location now occupied by Kenny's Flower Shop on State Street in downtown Media, Pennsylvania.
In 1939, his son James N. Rigby bought the property at 1 W. Baltimore Pike in Media. When deciding to move from the much smaller State Street location, people advised against it since the trolley ran right out front of the original location!
William C. Rigby III joined the family business after serving in the U.S. Army in Panama and the Panama Canal Zone. In 1972, he opened up his own funeral home in Chadds Ford, while continuing to work with his family in Media.
Upon retirement in 2005, William C.'s son, William R. Rigby, inherited the business. In 2010 the property in Chadds Ford was sold and the name of the business was changed from "Rigby Funeral Home of Chadds Ford" to "Rigby Funeral Home."
Today, Rigby Funeral Home shares the facility in Media with the J. Nelson Rigby Funeral Home.
The Rigby Funeral Home (formerly of Chadds Ford) remains a separate business from the J. Nelson Rigby Funeral Home today and is run by William R. Rigby.
